Example of Biology Collection Posting

The female pine cone below reflects an example of a gymnosperm (naked seed) tree. Pine cones originate from conifers, which are cone bearing plants that contain the reproductive structures for a new pine tree. What differentiates a female from a male pine cone is the presence of pollen in the male. The male cone is also noticeably smaller, while the familiar female cone is larger and produces seeds and contains the egg.

To the right, you will also notice the smaller male cone. In addition to its size, male cones also exhibit a shorter life span than that of their female counterparts.
