Biology Collection # 2: Nelson Damachi

Stem herbaceous: A plant lacking a permanent woody stem; many are flowering garden plants or potherbs; some having medicinal properties and some are pests. They are structures that look and act like leaves with leaf-like texture and color.
Pollinator: An insect that carries pollen from one flower to another this enable fertilization and sexual reproduction, examples are butterflies and bees.

Insect: These are small air-breathing arthropods that have a hard exoskeleton, a three-part body; head, thorax, and abdomen and three pairs of jointed legs. As one can see the fly above has all attributes that make up an insect. They are different varieties, such as ants, bees, and cockroaches

Heartwood: This is the older inactive central wood of a tree or woody plant; usually darker and denser than the surrounding sapwood. If one cuts the tree trunk above in two, they will see a thin light brown portion, and a denser dark portion, this dark portion is referred to as the heartwood.

Gymnosperm leaf: A plant, such as a cycad or conifer, whose seeds are not enclosed within an ovary. They come in a few varieties such as awl-like, scale-like, and needle-like. The one above is an example of a needle-like gymnosperm-leaf

Endotherm: This is a warm-blooded animal which maintains a constant body temperature, a few example are birds, cats, dogs and most notably human beings.

Deciduous leaf: Plants that shed their leaves seasonally, mostly during the cold and dry seasons, annually. Examples are trees and shrubs. What is impressive about them are wide array of colors that their leaves display before they are shed. This tree sheds its leaves every fall season, therefore it is a deciduous leaf

Basidiomycete: Members of a group of fungi called Basidiomycotina, which includes mushrooms, shelf fungi and puffballs. They produce spores that are formed on the outside of a special cell called the basidium. The mushroom above could be characterized as a basidiomycete.

Autotroph: An organism that makes organic material from inorganic material; a primary producer; examples includes plants, phytoplankton, and some bacteria. The picture of grass above depicts an autotroph because it produces its own food and is a primary producer.

Animal that has a segmented body: This is an animal that is divided into parts often with slight variations down the length of the body; mostly insects such as ants and centipedes and animals such as lobsters.
